Detect Different viruses using multiple antivirus engines

Posted on 05:47 by Unknown
Virus detection and its removal are made through an antivirus program which finds out viruses in a computer and then removes or repairs the virus problem. But today an interesting tip, how to scan your system without any installed antivirus program. You can scan any specific file for viruses, malware, worms and trojans on your system without any preloaded antivirus protection.

Virus Total is a free service that facilitates you for quick scan to detect viruses, malware, worms and trojans. VirusTotal will analyze your system files using multiple antivirus engines. Virus Total is not a proper substitute of installed antivirus program, because this service works only when you will be connected to internet.
Now open the Virustotal site to start scan process.
Now under the "Upload the file" section, click on browse button to select the virus affected file and press "Send File" button.
Here VirusTotal will takes some time to upload file (depends upon the file size and internet speed).

Now scanning process will be started to scan affected file.
It will again takes some time to scan affected file using latest antivirus version and gives you detailed results from each antivirus engine with statistics.

Identifying Unknown hardware Problems and troubleshooting them

Posted on 04:22 by Unknown
Hardware problems are quite difficult to tackle, worse if under Windows. Windows is very nasty when it comes to hardware.

Identifying problem in computer hardware
Always calm down. Try to solve the problem yourself before resolving to formatting or sending to your computer dealer. First, know what's happening and the cause of it. In my case, the installation must have overwrite my old setting and replaced the wrong file. There must be a reason why Windows is acting improperly.

Logging Back On
First, try to log back on. If you can't log into Windows, don't panic. Restart the computer. When the text "Starting Windows 98..." appears, press F8. A menu will appear. Choose "Safe Mode" to continue. Safe mode will take some time to load. When you are in Windows, go to Control Panel, System. Click on the Device Manager tab. Find the faulty hardware driver and delete it. Open autoexec.bat and config.sys (both are hidden files in your root directory) with notepad. If the hardware is a CD-ROM or sound card, it will probably write add some lines. Check whether there are backup file (autoexec.bak, autoexec.b~k e.g.) since most installation will back up the two important files. If there is, simply replace them with the backup files. If there isn't, put "REM " in front of every line that loads the hardware.

Hardware Repair
When you restart, your computer is probably ok, since you have deleted all instances of the hardware drivers. But the hardware isn't functioning. re-install the hardware drivers, restart and you're done! If the problem persists, your probably have a system conflict go to the next page for more.

Increase your internet speed by 20 percent

Posted on 02:38 by Unknown
Microsoft reserves 20.00% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc

You can get it back:
Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc" without quotes. This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> QOS Packet Scheduler -> Limit Reservable Bandwidth.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Do 10 things for your computer maintenance

Posted on 03:06 by Unknown
When most computer consumers talk about basic computer maintenance tips, they are usually referring to doing things like defragmentation, file and folder cleanup, and software and driver updates - however there is one other crucial piece of the puzzle that most people are missing, and it is the piece that can have the biggest effect on how well your computer performs.

While things like defragging and file/folder cleanup can increase your computer's performance slightly, cleaning out your computer's registry of corrupt and outdated entries can do wonders for it.

Your computer's registry contains information about almost everything on your computer - from software to hardware, to drivers and DLLs and if it is not functioning properly and contains numerous corrupt entries, it will severely affect your computer's ability to process information and perform tasks in a timely manner.

The reason your registry becomes corrupt is simply due to normal usage. When you install a program, uninstall an old one, update drivers, delete folders or files, or perform other updates, all of that information is stored in the registry. Unfortunately, as all of these tasks are performed, not all of the entries within the registry are updated correctly or removed if they are no longer used.

This results in a much larger database of information that your operating system needs to slug through in order to find what it needs to run tasks and programs which essentially means a slower response time.

Below are things which you should do for your computer maintenance

Shut Down Safely
File Maintenance
Keep Bad Stuff Away
Backup your data
Keep The PC Clean

How To Use Task Manager To Troubleshoot Windows

Posted on 04:32 by Unknown
Task Manager is a Windows system service that displays the tasks or processes currently running on your pc. To open Task Manager, press Ctrl + Alt + Del. The Applcations tab lists the applications currently running on your computer.

The Processes tab displays a comprehensive list of all the processes currently running on your computer. This can be very useful for monitoring your system. The process tab displays information about the processor usage and memory usage of each process. The problem is, how to recognize a process. Below is a list of some processes you may see in Task Managers Processes list.

"System Idle Process"
"System" The Windows System Process
"SMSS.EXE" Session Manager Subsystem
"CSRSS.EXE" Client Server Runtime Subsystem
"WinLOGON.EXE" The Windows Logon process
"SERVICES.EXE" Services Control Manager
"LSASS.EXE" Local Security Authentication Server Service
"svchost.exe" Service Host
"spoolsv.exe" The print spooler service
"explorer.exe" Windows Explorer
"TASKMGR.EXE" The Task Manager
"regsvc.exe" Remote Registry Service
"System Idle Process" is basically another name for the time when Windows is doing nothing. There are hundreds of thousands of processes that run on a computer, so you will definitely find names 0f many other processes that are not listed above. For a list of well known processes, visit www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm. You can also learn about almost any task by using its name as a search term in Google.

Task Manager can also be used to tweak your system if it's running slow. The Performance tab displays running graphs 0f your computers CPU and memory usage. If the CPU usage seems to be running over 80 percent most of the time, 0r if the memory usage seems to be running higher than the total physical memory, you may want to shut down some applications or processes.
0n the Process tab, you can identify processes that are consuming a lot of processor time. Click twice on the CPU column heading to sort the CPU column so the processes hogging the most CPU time on top. You can sort the "Mem Usage" column the same way.

0n the Application tab, if you right click on the name of an application and, in the popup menu that appears, choose "Go To Process", Task Manager will open the Processes tab and highlight the process that runs the application. 0n the Processes tab, if you right-click on the name of a process, you can choose "SetPriority" and promote the priority of the process you need (or demote the priority of a different process to free up some resources).

If you go to the Application tab and shut down an application, you will shut down any processes related to that application. 0r, you might choose to shut down a background process that you can identify. To shut down an application or process, click on it's name in the list to highlight it, then click on the End Task button.

On the Processes tab, if you right click on the name of a process, you can choose "End Process Tree" to kill the process and any sub-processes started by the process.
Task Manager can also be used for troubleshooting. If an application freezes up, you can open Task Manager and shut down the application. If the entire system freezes up, you can use Task Manager to shut down a process that is hogging all the CPU time or memory.

If you spend some time monitoring your computer with task Manager, eventually you will become familiar with the processes that commonly run. Then, when you see an unfamiliar process, you can do a little investigation to make sure it's not a virus. For example, if you see msblast.exe in the process list, your computer is infected with the Blaster virus. You might be able to detect and eliminate a new virus before an antivirus update is available.

Microsoft corporation spends $300.00 million on Ad campaign

Posted on 06:46 by Unknown
After sleeping for nearly three years while Apple corporation successfully bashed it every night on network television with the Mac vs. PC ad campaign, Microsoft corporation has sobered up and taken the offensive over the last several months with a series of marketing messages comparing the relative prices of Macs and PCs made by Microsoft corporation's partners.

Perhaps someone at Microsoft Corporation should start to wonder what kind of branding message they are implanting in the public mind... In continuing to push this strategy, Microsoft corporation is inadvertently reinforcing every single branding message Apple has ever attached to the Mac.

Virtually everyone who has ever used a personal computer has used Windows , meaning that almost every single computer user on the planet has developed an association with Windows,"

Microsoft corporation has essentially conceded that point. As others have noted, Microsoft corporation's shoppers don't ever wonder about the relative merits of Finder versus Windows Explorer in its latest series of ads. Instead, they focus completely on trying to make a hardware-to-hardware price comparison between various notebooks," Kraziit writes. "Yet, Microsoft Corporation is a software company. And software, not hardware, is where you form a lasting relationship with a computer.

The only thing the PC industry is excited about right now are Netbooks, which they fail to mention are eroding their margins even more than they have already been eroded after decades of price wars. And now Microsoft corporation is once again driving the price message, training consumers to expect ever lower prices from their computer salesperson," Kraazit writes. "Apple, meanwhile, with the best margins in the personal computer industry and two highly profitable consumer electronics products funding its growth, has now had its marketing message of the last two years--Macs are better than PCs--amplified by its rival's message--PCs are cheaper than Macs."

Kraziit writes, "While the world needs Kias, the world wants BMWs, and anyone old enough to grasp a dollar understands that most times, you get what you pay for. Consumer confidence will one day return, and in taking the 'Apple Tax' campaign to new heights (or lows) Microsoft corporation has not only strained the bounds of credulity, it has cemented the idea that Macs are an aspirational product."

Conficker virus more publicity than harm

Posted on 06:40 by Unknown
Damaged was not as big as people thought

It was no April fool’s joke, the Conficker computer virus attacked as promised but the damage was not as big as many people feared.

This "April fools virus" was well exposed, but it's not the only virus that is making the rounds, the Senior Network Technician at Entre Computer Center in West Springfield says that these viruses can store passwords and sensitive information and pass the data back to the source of the malware.

"They can corrupt user’s data along with compromising banking info, credit card info, and social security information as well," said Joe Paudf of Entre Computer Center.
